About

Who is behind Rational Compounder

Rational Compounder is written by Viktoras Vatinas, a CFA and CAIA charterholder with 17 years across private equity, private debt and family office portfolio management. The research published here is the same analysis used to run real portfolios — written down, argued explicitly, and open to being wrong.

Private equity and private debt

Fund selection, manager due diligence and commitment pacing across buyout, growth and direct lending strategies — including the unglamorous work of reconciling reported IRRs with cash actually returned.

Family office portfolio management

Multi-asset portfolio construction for private capital: strategic allocation, currency policy, liquidity planning, manager monitoring and reporting to principals who ask precise questions.

CFA and CAIA charterholder

Formal training in public and alternative markets, applied daily to valuation, attribution and risk work rather than kept as a line on a business card.

Why this exists

Most material aimed at private investors is either introductory or promotional. Very little of it carries the analytical standard applied inside institutions: stated assumptions, net-of-cost numbers, and a named condition under which the argument fails. Rational Compounder applies that standard to questions private investors actually face — how much to allocate to private markets, what a factor tilt really costs, how currency exposure enters a portfolio without anyone choosing it.

PortSmith exists for the same reason. Portfolio attribution, factor exposure and stress testing are standard institutional tools. They should not require an institutional budget.

Nothing published here is personalised financial advice. It is research and framework work, written for investors who make their own decisions.
